    Surgically acquired mid-face deformity is one of the most challenging deformities to disguise, and more importantly has a significant, immediate impact on the patient anatomy post operatively. There is a loss of contour to the mid face that cannot be easily hidden by surgical dressings. There can also be a functional deformity for older patients that wear glasses. In the UK most units provide basic ‘contour’ dressings, usually made from thermoplastic materials that are taped into place during the operation. These are poorly fitting, and usually made from a clear or pink thermoplastic dental material, which then has to be covered in tape to hide its poor skin match. We present our experience in Nottingham, using a purely digital workflow (Digital photos-MIMCS-Freeform) to simulate the surgical deformity and provide an immediate intra operative prosthesis. This is a small retrospective review of 6 patients feedback (21-72yrs). The feedback from patients was mostly positive. 1 patient did not like the surgical tape used to secure the prosthesis and disguise the margin. The technique provides a simple prosthesis that can be completed without the patient present and that is easily adapted in theatre (cut to shape). The technique is particularly useful in cases where patients have surgery at other hospitals, or in other parts of the country prior to being referred to your unit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      I trained in Sheffield (1991-2002) and now lead the unit at the regional oncology and major trauma centre in Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (2002-). I have been involved in the development of additive manufacture and 3D printing since 2004. I was successful in obtaining a grant for developing 3D design tools in facial prosthetics in 2005 (\u00a3900k) and was the first to introduce in-house 3D printing into a UK hospital (2008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • I have supported the wider profession on many national training and development initiatives and have been on the professional body council in the UK, the IMPT, for 16 years in various roles including Chairman. I had the great pleasure in accepting an honorary membership of the IASPE for my numerous contributions to IASPE events over the years from Professor Ferderspiel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • I was part of the writing team for the MSc in Reconstructive Science (2010-12) and helped finalise the Scientist Training Programme in the UK. I was the Lead Writer for the Clinical Doctorate in Reconstructive science, the Consultant Training pathway in Reconstructive Science (2016-17). I have published 25+ peer reviewed articles and book chapters. I was the first Maxillofacial Prosthetist to give the prestigious Presidents Lecture at the British Association of Oral & Maxilofacial Surgeons Congress in 2021.  I was the first UK Maxillofacial Prosthetist to pass the new assessment for Clinical Scientists and then the Consultant Clinical Scientist pathway in Reconstructive Science. Only 2 UK Maxillofacial Prosthetists have managed to get through both of these processes.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • I lecture at national and international courses for surgeons and epithetist\/prosthetist\/scientists..  More recently I led the push to broaden our \u2018base\u2019 from a purely Dental Technology focus to a wider science and engineering base. I believe this is the future, we must all adapt to changes to meet the requirements of our patients and service users. That includes a broader, a digitally focused workforce with a variety of skills, compared to our traditional routes. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
